Q: "I have an L-shaped master bedroom and need help with arranging my furniture. Any tips?" —Devi P.

A: Devi, those L-shaped rooms can be a headache. Without knowing the specifics of your space, such as the window or door placement and the room flow, let me give you some basic advice.

Much like the other rooms in a house, the bedroom needs to serve some very basic functions. Mainly, it's a sleeping chamber, but, it also serves as the transition space between your most private life and your more public one. Depending on the actual layout of your space, I might allocate the more private part of the "L" for sleeping. You can use the other part of the room for something specific as well, such as a dressing area. Or you could add some seating and light fixtures and use the space as a sitting room or a reading area. The only thing I usually don't recommend is putting a desk in your bedroom, as it could easily lead to an invasion by your "work life" and distract from creating the peaceful retreat you want your bedroom to be.

I love this little corner of my good friend Amanda Nisbet's master bedroom. She carved out some space for a little seating area — and the fresh monochromatic color story feels perfectly restful.

Cheers,
Scot
