Small Cottage Bedroom Ideas

The country cottage in all of its low-ceilinged, rabbit-warren-esque glory is indelibly associated with English interior design. Exposed beams, wooden floors, sloping ceilings, leaded windows - all of these architectural quirks are beloved features of this type of house, although they can be difficult to decorate around. One of the trickiest areas of all is surely the bedroom, often squeezed into small spaces and nestling under steep rafters. A lack of storage and little room to manoeuvre can be serious practical issues, but the charm of these sweet bedrooms usually outweighs their issues. Whether you're looking to decorate a small cottage bedroom or you just want to dream about one, we've gathered together some of our favourite examples of the style, so scroll down for inspiration on all things tiny and quaint.

    Cosy Farmhouse

Interior designer Harriet Anstruther's grandmother's shawl makes the bed in the spare room of her Sussex farmhouse especially cosy, while the wooden crates used as a side table add a rustic edge

  • Oxfordshire Cottage

This Oxfordshire cottage is a charming mix of old and new. Emma Burns of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler worked with the existing features of each room to breathe new life into them. The bedroom's orange velvet curtains (out of shot) were an original fixture, though Emma had them remade and hung from an antique pole to match the quilt (which she sourced from Colefax and Fowler Antiques). The wallpaper is 'Alice' by George Spencer, while Oka is a good match for the embroidered cushion covers.

  • Curtained Bed

The best thing about having a small or strangely shaped room is the opportunity it presents to use your space imaginatively. The alcove behind the door, in the home of designer Patrick Williams of Berdoulat design, has been turned in to a charming sleeping nook. Enclosed behind the curtain are shelves, and a lamp for reading. The room is painted in Farrow and Ball's 'Lamp Room Gray'; while the random-width floorboards were bought on eBay. Reclaimed drawers are used under the bed as storage.

    Converted Chapel

The spare bedroom of interior designer Diana Sieff's home (a converted chapel in Oxfordshire) has a vintage chic look, with a trio Lebanese plates hanging on the wall. 'Isfahan' porcelain plates by OKA, £179 for a set of four, would create a similar look.

    Georgian Attic

In Ben Pentreath's Dorset parsonage, the small attic bedroom has twin beds sitting neatly on either side, opening up the space. Cream wooden panelling and a bright white ceiling make the small space feel bigger.

  • Soho Farmhouse

This cosy bedroom at Soho Farmhouse features green floral wallpaper, creating a countryside feel. Matching curtains form a cosy canopy around the four-poster bed.

    Tiny Barn Conversion

The hefty and worn bedframe adds a country ruggedness in the tiny bedroom of this barn conversion designed by Christopher Howe. Christopher's choices were driven by the notion that the barn should look as if it was lived in by someone working on the local estate. 'I like the idea that the furniture could have been begged and borrowed from the big house,' he explains. 'The truth is, the owners have had the benefit of 40 years of my hoarding.' The effect is a pleasingly unpretentious mix of well-designed objects that bear the scuffs and bruises of a well-lived life.

    Wiltshire Farmhouse

Since moving into her husband's 300 year old Wiltshire farmhouse, designer Sarah Vanrenen has enhanced its quirky charm, with an adjusted layout and unexpected colours. Upstairs, the seven bedrooms are equally individual - one has a cheerful mixture of lilac and jade, another lime and sherbet pink. A spare room is decorated with green tones, with sari fabric is on the ottoman at the end of the bed.

The blind and headboard have been made in a matching fabric - a cost-effective trick for adding a punch of pattern to a bedroom. The blind is prettily trimmed in Samuel & Sons pom-poms. A window sill has been turned in to a reading nook with a padded cushion.

    Somerset Country House

The owners of this Somerset country house had not anticipated taking on such a large project, but their careful renovation enhanced by modern decorative touches has resulted in a smart, yet comfortable, forever home. Two Designer's Guild beds upholstered in 'Brera' linen furnish a small attic bedroom. The white decor combined with turquoise bed throws means the small space has a calm feel.
